| HISTORY NOTE : | Van Buren Oldham was a resident of Weakley County, Tennessee who enlisted in the 9th Tennessee Infantry, Confederate States Army, in May of 1861 at the age of twenty-one. He participated in the battle of Perryville, where he was wounded and captured by Union forces. He spent a brief time as a prisoner at Camp Douglas, Illinois and was exchanged in early 1863. He returned to his former unit, which by then was consolidated with the 6th Tennessee Infantry. Oldham was involved in General Braxton Bragg's withdrawal from Middle Tennessee and saw action at the battle of Chickamauga. He later partook in the defense of Atlanta during the Spring and Summer of 1864. He remained in military service until October of 1864, when he took the Oath of Allegiance in Nashville. Following the war he became a medical doctor. He died at the early age of 44. |
