HISTORY NOTE : | J. P. Cannon was born in Gravelly Springs, Alabama in 1843. In the Fall of 1861, Cannon joined the Confederate Army in Florence, Alabama as a private. He would see action with Company C of the 27th Alabama in the states of Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Following the war, he opened a pharmacy in McKenzie, Tennessee and resided there until the day of his death in 1919. |
CONTENTS : | Consists of diary and memoir transcripts of a private who served in the 27th Alabama Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Most of the material present in the collection is in his book entitled "Inside of rebeldom: the daily life of a private in the Confederate Army." Includes biographical information and photographs of the author. |
