Jones was born in Yorkville, Tennessee on April 20, 1912 to
William Frank and Hortense (Pipkin) Jones. He attended the University of Tennessee Junior College from
1931-1932 and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville from 1933-1934. He was granted a Bachelor of
Science degree in Agriculture in 1934 from the University of Tennessee. After receiving his degree he
worked for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture from 1934 to 1941. In 1941 he was employed with the
Tennessee Dairy Products Association and in 1943 began working as an agricultural agent for the Illinois
Central Rail Road company. A position he held until 1949 when he was appointed Tennessee Commissioner of
Agriculture by Governor Gordon Browning. When his term expired he returned working as an agricultural
agent for the I.C.R.R. Company until 1969. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy appointed Jones as Chairman
of the Tennessee Agricultural and Conservation Committee. He was reappointed by President Lyndon B.
Johnson four years later and served in that capacity until elected to the House of Representatives to fill
the vacancy left by the death of Representative Robert A. Everitt. From 1969 to 1988 he was re-elected
nine consecutive times and was a key figure on the House Committee on Agriculture. He would also serve as
chair on the Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit and Rural Development and Chairman of the Subcommittee
on Administrative Services. In 1988, Mr. Jones retired from Congress to his family farm in Yorkville where
