Professional Profile

Dr. Buttrey joined the Department of Agriculture, Geosciences, and Natural Resources in August 2014. She was reared in rural Middle Tennessee before pursuing her formal education in agriculture and animal science at the University of Tennessee at Martin (B.S. '03), Texas A&M University (M.S. '06), and West Texas A&M University (Ph.D. ’11). Prior to returning to UTM, Dr. Buttrey spent five years as a beef cattle extension and research assistant at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension in Amarillo and two years as an assistant professor at Louisiana Tech University.

Teaching and Related Service

Dr. Buttrey teaches undergraduate animal science courses in livestock evaluation, animal nutrition, reproduction, cow-calf and stocker-feeder beef cattle production, and current issues in animal agriculture. She provides academic advising for undergraduate and graduate students.

Additionally, Dr. Buttrey is the faculty advisor for the UTM Student Cattlemen’s Association and faculty and scholarship advisor for Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She serves on several University committees and is a member of the Honors Council and graduate faculty.

Scholarly Activity

Dr. Buttrey enjoys mentoring undergraduate students as they work on research projects. Projects have ranged from stocker cattle grazing studies and studying the effects of castration on cattle performance to effects of mat-feeding on pig performance and how diet quality affects liver function in cats!

More recently, she has developed a keen interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning and is a member of the 1st and 4th cohorts of the UTM Faculty Learning Community. She is working with her colleagues to improve her teaching methods and foster more inter-disciplinary learning opportunities across the UTM campus.

Personal Sketch

Dr. Buttrey, her husband Brad (UTM ’05), and two children live on a small farm near Martin where they raise Red Angus cattle and Katahdin hair sheep. They enjoy working together on the farm and spending time with family.
