Micah Barnes, Electronics and Communications Specialist at the University of Tennessee at Martin, holds a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from UTM. Following his 1995 graduation he studied bass with Jack Budrow at Interlochen, where he also served on the production crew. Micah went on to start the world fusion jam band 27bstroke6 (along with UTM colleague Dr. Julie Hill) and relocated to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where he remained until 2012. While in working in Murfreesboro, he carved out a niche as a utility musician, writing, performing, and recording with numerous groups in various genres on an array of instruments. In 2003, he started Girls & Boys Studios to work with independent artists in Middle Tennessee. Concurrently, he created Colossal Head, a folkadelic funkytonk group for which he wrote and produced original material, and began recording regional independent artists. In 2011, Micah wrote, performed, produced, and recorded “Musica Ostium Infernum: Liber Primus,” which he followed by producing, directing, and performing in the live production by the same name later that year. In January 2012, he returned to West Tennessee to create 3D models for the Discovery Park of America and start a reclaimed wood furniture business. Soon thereafter, he began designing the facilities for Soleil Garden Center, which is home to his new recording studio—Bronze. A multifaceted musician, Micah coordinates audio and video recording needs for the UTM Department of Music; he offers classes on recording and music technology as well as applied lessons on guitar, bass, and double bass.
