Professional Profile

Dr. Buttrey joined the Department of Agriculture, Geosciences, and Natural Resources in August 2014. She was reared in rural Middle Tennessee before pursuing her formal education in agriculture and animal science at the University of Tennessee at Martin (B.S. '03), Texas A&M University (M.S. '06), and West Texas A&M University (Ph.D. ’11). Prior to returning to UTM, Dr. Buttrey spent five years as a beef cattle extension and research assistant at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension in Amarillo and two years as an assistant professor at Louisiana Tech University.

Teaching and Related Service

Dr. Buttrey teaches undergraduate animal science courses in livestock evaluation, animal nutrition, reproduction, cow-calf and stocker-feeder beef cattle production, and current issues in animal agriculture. She provides academic advising for undergraduate and graduate students.

Additionally, Dr. Buttrey is the faculty advisor for the UTM Student Cattlemen’s Association and faculty and scholarship advisor for Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She serves on several University committees and is a member of the Honors Council and graduate faculty.

Scholarly Activity

Dr. Buttrey enjoys mentoring undergraduate students as they work on research projects. Projects have ranged from stocker cattle grazing studies and studying the effects of castration on cattle performance to effects of mat-feeding on pig performance and how diet quality affects liver function in cats!

More recently, she has developed a keen interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning and is a member of the 1st and 4th cohorts of the UTM Faculty Learning Community. She is working with her colleagues to improve her teaching methods and foster more inter-disciplinary learning opportunities across the UTM campus.

Personal Sketch

Dr. Buttrey, her husband Brad (UTM ’05), and two children live on a small farm near Martin where they raise Red Angus cattle and Katahdin hair sheep. They enjoy working together on the farm and spending time with family.

Lauroside B (1) is a naturally occurring molecule that was first extracted from Sweet Bay Laurel in 2004.  In 2011, researchers demonstrated that 1 has potent biological activity against malignant skin cancer cells, making it an attractive target for laboratory synthesis.  Research in the Smith Group is focused on a synthetic route to access 1 via the intermediate synthesis of Vomifoliol (2).

Dr. Liz Aleksander is Associate Professor of Music at the University of Tennessee at Martin, where she teaches clarinet and music theory. She is a passionate teacher who strives to provide valuable learning experiences for her students. Since arriving at UTM in 2013, Dr. Aleksander has brought in visiting artists from across the country. She has also started a clarinet choir and established a clarinet studio recital to provide additional performance opportunities for her students. In addition to UTM, she has worked with clarinetists in Brazil, Mexico, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Nebraska, and Arizona.

Dr. Aleksander is an active chamber musician, performing primarily with the LCD Woodwind Trio, which has commissioned and premiered a number of works for the unusual combination of flute, clarinet, and saxophone. In addition, she is bass clarinetist with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Jackson (TN) Symphony Orchestra, Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, and Omaha Symphonic Winds, including a concerto performance with the latter. Dr. Aleksander has also performed at a number of international conferences, including the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest, the Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, and Andover Educators International Conference; Dr. Aleksander has also performed at regional conferences for the ICA (southeast region), the College Music Society (southern region), and the Music by Women Festival. She has also been published in the ICA’s national journal (The Clarinet) and blog (BuzzReed).

Philanthropy is also important to Dr. Aleksander, who founded and serves as Director of UTM’s Community Music Academy; she also participates in many outreach trips with LCD Woodwind Trio. Sigma Alpha Iota international music fraternity is also an important philanthropic organization to Dr. Aleksander: she is currently an advisor for Epsilon Iota chapter, and she was previously Membership Trainer for the Bethel University colony and Province Officer for Xi A Province. In addition, during her time in Nebraska, she began the annual SAI outreach program Music at the Museum, which allows children to try different instruments and experience live classical music.

Prior to working at UTM, Dr. Aleksander taught at Midland University, Cornerstone Academy of Clarinet, and Southeast Community College in Nebraska. She holds a D.M.A. from the University of Nebraska, a M.Mus. with distinction from Northern Arizona University, and a B.Mus. summa cum laude from Ohio University. Her teachers include Diane Barger, Michael Sullivan, Rebecca Rischin, and Kevin Schempf.

Micah Barnes, Electronics and Communications Specialist at the University of Tennessee at Martin, holds a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from UTM. Following his 1995 graduation he studied bass with Jack Budrow at Interlochen, where he also served on the production crew. Micah went on to start the world fusion jam band 27bstroke6 (along with UTM colleague Dr. Julie Hill) and relocated to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where he remained until 2012. While in working in Murfreesboro, he carved out a niche as a utility musician, writing, performing, and recording with numerous groups in various genres on an array of instruments. In 2003, he started Girls & Boys Studios to work with independent artists in Middle Tennessee. Concurrently, he created Colossal Head, a folkadelic funkytonk group for which he wrote and produced original material, and began recording regional independent artists. In 2011, Micah wrote, performed, produced, and recorded “Musica Ostium Infernum: Liber Primus,” which he followed by producing, directing, and performing in the live production by the same name later that year. In January 2012, he returned to West Tennessee to create 3D models for the Discovery Park of America and start a reclaimed wood furniture business. Soon thereafter, he began designing the facilities for Soleil Garden Center, which is home to his new recording studio—Bronze. A multifaceted musician, Micah coordinates audio and video recording needs for the UTM Department of Music; he offers classes on recording and music technology as well as applied lessons on guitar, bass, and double bass.
