Academic Signs
- Deterioration in quality or quantity of work
- Repeated absences or lateness from class or other related commitments
- Disorganized or erratic performance in the classroom
- Difficulty engaging in class (i.e., completing and turning in assignments)
Physical Signs
- Changes in energy level – unusual/dramatic increase or decrease
- Changes in appearance (disheveled or unkept)
- Decline in personal hygiene
- Evidence of substance use
- Substantial changes in eating patterns
- Dramatic weight loss or weight gain
Emotional Signs
- Emotional outbursts including anger, irritation, agitation, extreme sadness, or happiness
- Withdrawing from friends, family, relationships
- Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
- Expressions of hopelessness and fear
Suicial Warning Signs
- Talking about wanting to die or kill oneself
- Talking about feeling trapped or wanting to “escape”
- Wanting to “to go sleep and never wake up”
- Behaving recklessly
- Writing about death, dying, or suicide
- Giving away favorite possessions
- A sudden and dramatic increase in mood can also be a warning sign of suicide
Common Symptoms of Depression
- Apparent or reported persistent sadness
- Feelings of sadness or emptiness
- Lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities
- Disruption in sleep patterns (increased or decreased)
- Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, guilt
- Agitation, restlessness, irritability
- Fatigue and loss of energy
- Inability to think or concentrate, or make decisions
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide that may or may not include a plan or intent
Common Symptoms of Anxiety
- Feelings of nervousness, restlessness, or tense overall
- Having a sense of impending danger, panic, or doom
- Increased heartrate
- Increased perspiration
- Rapid breathing
- Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than present worry
- Trouble sleeping
- Avoiding situations that trigger anxiety
