Applied Research
Investigation undertaken in order to acquire new knowledge but which is directed primarily towards a specific, practical aim or objective, often for a state, commercial, or client driven purpose. Includes funding for projects where the primary purpose is to undertake an external funding to acquire or maintain facilities or equipment that will be used for applied research.

Basic Research
Theoretical or experimental inquiry without regard to particular applications or potential commercial value. Includes funding for projects where the primary purpose is to undertake an external funding to acquire or maintain facilities or equipment that will be used for basic research.

Examples may include the following:
- Bench/laboratory research
- Theoretical research
Clinical Research
Patient‐oriented medical investigation that either directly involves a particular person or group of people or uses materials from humans, such as their behavior or samples of their tissue which can be linked to a particular living person. Clinical research determines the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products, and treatment regimens intended for human use. Includes funding for projects where the primary purpose is to undertake an external funding to acquire or maintain facilities or equipment that will be used for clinical research.

Conference/Seminar
Use “Instruction” for conferences & seminars unless there is no instructional content associated with the conference / seminar.

Fellowships
Assistance to or in behalf of an individual to support further studies/training which will enhance that individual's level of competence and research.

- Fulbright Awards
- NEH Fellowships
Institutional Support
External funding for projects related to central executive-level activities concerned with management and long-range planning of the entire institution, fiscal operations, administrative data, & information processing, HR/Personnel, Non-academic facilities, etc.

Rarely applicable to sponsored programs; however, a Title III could carry this designation.
Instruction
Projects that improve or expand the instructional program including credit & non-credit courses, academic curriculum development & delivery, vocational & technical instruction, remedial & tutorial instruction, and community education.

Public Service
Projects that provide non‐instructional services that harness UTM’s intellectual and cultural resources to benefit individuals and communities external to the institution.

- Public Broadcasting Services
- TRiO programs
- K-12 outreach projects serving students
- Public performances/art
Scholarships
External funding that is fully or primarily used to provide tuition support and/or trainee stipends.

Student Services
Projects that provide direct support to students of a non-instructional nature.

Examples may include the following:
- Student Support Services
- Mentoring programs for UTM students
- Advising/Peer Counseling for UTM students
Training
Use “Instruction” which includes instruction/training for UTM students and community members via credit and noncredit learning experiences.
Notes/Examples
In most cases, “Instruction” would be the more appropriate selection. Use “Training” if grant specifically states that it is a “training grant.”
